Each of these sites was measured, mapped, and drawn, recording in meticulous detail a pharaonic egypt never before glimpsed by the outside worldbut how was the outside world to see what the scientists had discovered? fortunately, the savants decided, before they had been in egypt for even six months, that their discoveries had to be published, and they collected and sketched with that aim in mindthis extremely rare genuine copper plaque circa made while napoleon bonaparte was on a scientific mission to egypt, (with 150 scientists on board l'orient and is believed to be the only one in existence) in addition to soldiers and sailors, napoleon brought along 150 savants — scientists, engineers and scholars whose responsibility was to capture, not egyptian soil, but egyptian culture and historymeticulous topographical surveys were made, native animals and plants were studied, minerals were collected and classified, local trades and industry were scrutinizedbut the volumes on natural history were also impressive, with their crocodiles, asps, lotuses, and palmsnever before had a single country inspired such a monumental encyclopaedia of such depth and splendourthe plaque is absolutely dazzling when experienced in person, showing great tactility and radianceand while the military invasion was an ultimate failure, the scholarly one was successful beyond anyone’s expectationsthe vibrant colours that show glorious workmanship of this plaque is in excellent condition, showing no cracks or significant condition issues (other than what’s been mentioned)over the years, concluding in , a total of 23 volumes would appear(on the roof only very small indeed) this is superb example of this exceedingly rare plaquethe most impressive were surely the volumes of antiquities, spilling over with obelisks, colossi, temples, sphinxes, and all manner of artefacts) and is in excellent condition for its age there is some slight discolouration as you would expect due to its age and there as i slight deration on the top part of the roof of the plaque, this again is quite normal for copper plaques of this agein response to any inquiry, since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional reportthe execution is exquisite and the proportions and scale quite refinedthe total set contained 837 engravings, many of them of unprecedented size, which captured egyptian culture from every possible vantage pointmost famously, ancient egypt was discovered — the temples and tombs of luxor, philae, dendera, and the valley of the kingsafter their return to france in , they continued to organize materials, and finally, in , the first volumes of the description de l'égypte were publishedsome of the colours show minor surface irregularities which are inherent to the natural qualities of the plaque, and with a few sporadic internal hairlines (all stable) which also appear inherent on the plaquethe painted copper is very slight light surface wear and minor surface soiling to the roof areas of the designall of the colours and shades appear original, intact and with some slight discolourationnotwithstanding this report or any discussions concerning condition of this sale, this sale is offered and sold "as is seen" in accordance with the conditions of this salethis rare plaque is in remarkable original conditionthree of these were the largest books that had ever been printed, standing over 43 inches tallthis copper plaque of the portico of the temple of dendera is believed to be the only one in existencethe plaque measures 43cm x 28condition report overall in excellent condition
