When you think of the way they've all faded back to obscurity so swiftly - Matt as a solo artist, Charlie in Fightstar, and James in Son Of Dork/co-writer mode for Melanie C and Jonas Brothers to name but two - and then, put on this album again, there's a question that's left floating round your head that you simply struggle to find the answer to when the music's stopped - just why did they split up again? Or rather, why did they go when they did, when you consider that they were particularly crucial, alongside Girls Aloud, in giving what's considered to be "manufactured" pop the shot in the arm that it was in dire need of at the time? The craftsmanship of these, fun, effervescent, punky pop songs like "Crashed The Wedding", "Air Hostess", "That Thing You Do" and "Nerdy" are testament to the talent they had together on this album and when they performed live that was so easily yet sadly lost. And, like all the best pop albums, it A) doesn't once get boring and B) even the slower numbers, usually regarded as the least appealing on albums of this genre are wonderfully executed - the underlying theme of teenage heartbreak and rejection seeping through on tracks like "Who's David?" and "Over Now" are particular cases in point. In short, this was the album that established them as no ordinary, run of the mill pop band, and I urge anyone with a lack of knowledge of proper pop music to hear this album.Read full review
