If you have an old generation TV like myself this streamer is a way to make it kind of smart. And indeed to my knowledge the only one as others I have come across are HMDI only. The downside is that it's slow to operate and feels clunky. It would seem that some on demand services such as iplayer are no longer supported. So it just about does the job but you'd only really buy it if you were in my situation.

Best thing i ever bought. I bought the roku box, because a friend recommended it. I wanted to watch tv channels from senegal. I was surprised that it offered more than i wanted. The whole family loves it. I have told all my friends about it.Cannot believe one can get soo much from a tiny box. Love it
Want a hassle free video streamer? This could be what you are looking for. After considering the plethora of other Android devices available, the bottom line is the way you use a Roku puts it in a different territory to any other kind of media centre or Android device. I've built a Windows Media centre and got the unofficial webTV plug in, but quite simply it is too clunky to use day to day. The Roku also has a clever trick up it's sleeve-Plex. For the geekier user, you can connect this and stream all kinds of data through this little box of magic. This part does however rely on having to keep a computer on that runs the media streamer program. The things that are holding it back are not to be blamed on the unit but the licencing of On Demand TV. BBC iPlayer is great, there are some other good channels but the lack of any other UK On Demand channels is a let down, however the same as a smart TV. The only unit that has been allowed to do this is the Youview (backed by Alan Sugar) that is £300 ( or 'free' with a long contract with a broadband and telephone provider at an inflated cost) For the price and simplicity, this is unbeatable. True plug and play, this is a great little box that makes On Demand TV easy. Playback is smooth and it is just so easy to use. Recommended, but just be aware in the UK of the lack of the UK on demand channelsRead full review
The Roku technically is a whizz; aesthetically, its a whizz, so why am I giving it only 3 stars? Well,it's because its content leaves a lot to be desired. I only use it for BBC iPlayer and I am not really interested in Netflix and much of the other mainly trashy American programmes. It clearly is an American product that caters mainly for the American public with only a slight nod to others. This product has the potential of being so much better than it is. If it included (as well as BBC iPlayer),5OD, ItvPlayer and 4 On Demand,as mooted on many Roku.UK forums,I would be giving it 5 Stars. Addendum:- Since I have had the Roku for a couple of weeks now, I feel I aught to upgrade my assessment of it. It now has 5 On Demand and I have installed something called Plex which allows me to stream videos etc. What it does, it does very well so I will up it a star and, provided the person knew just what a media streamer was supposed to do, I would recommend to a friend. Second Addendum:- It now has 4 On Demand! So, I would upgrade it to 41/2 Stars if I could.Read full review
