I bought this cd as a bit of a trip back down memory lane but having listened to it i was shocked by the amazing Steve Vai guitars all over it!!! I am a Vai fan always had been but had forgotten that his early collaborations as a hired hand had included PIL and dear old John Lydon. The guitar tracks really are amazing and reflect the slightly later work with David Lee Roth and Billy Sheehan on 'Skyscraper'. I was not disappointed with any of the tracks and although the album as a whole is a bit more mainstream than previous PIL and of course the beloved Sex Pistols Lydon is still his obnoxious self! Buy it for a quid on ebay, listen and enjoy.
I'm was interested in this CD because I'm a fan of the guitarist, Steve Vai, who contributed and played on each track, although, this is very different from his own musical output. The music is somewhat repetitive here with Lydon singing over it in his own inimitable way. It sounds very much like the music was written first and the lyrics added later-so they lack 'coherence' in that Lydon has to wait for the the start of the next musical'hook' before singing again-its quite primitive, but charmingly so (the famous 'Rise' is a good example of this) . However the production is sparklingly clear and it hasn't aged in the way many 80s music has. For Vai fans, there are a few moments where he stretches out and his style and incredible skill is let loose, but on the whole he remains restrained in his virtuosity which is fitting with the music herein.Read full review
