For me, Johnny Cash was a bit of an acquired taste as I've never really been into Country music. It took a long introduction over quite a period of time and I realised that the music that he made was not really like a lot of other country music at all. This particular album is legendary. Johnny Cash was the first high-profile artist who had even considered playing to a prison audience and decided to record it too. With a number of scrapes with the law himself, he identified with the prisoners and they of course identified with him. What is particularly striking about this recording is how much he provokes the crowd with songs that are about breaking the law and anti the system, and really getting the prisoners worked up. And then as the recording continues, he brings them back down, and sobers them, with a few darker and slower songs. It's a fantastic record and well worth buying.Read full review
