These cameras are great - just shows size doesn't mean best!! Having been disillusioned with SLR digital cameras of late have been trying smaller CSC types. The image quality with its kit lens is good, and you can also use older SLR screw mount lenses with an adapter (manual focus though) to get a cheap telephoto lens. A 50mm becomes a 135mm (2.7x). I used a 400mm telephoto to take a picture of the moon (1080mm) amazing if you can hold it still enough. The controls could be more button based instead of hidden in the menu but its really meant for P&S users. It could also do with a hand grip. I made one up out of a piece of aluminium bar. I love it!! And it takes great stereo sound HD videos.
The Nikon J1 is a superb camera as I was impressed with the quality of the photos especially when fitted with the super sharp 18.5mm f1.8 prime lens. The camera is obviously considerably smaller and lighter than a typical DLSR and the results are brilliant. The switches take a little getting used to, for example when changing the aperture and the pop up flash is tiny; but it does the job well. This camera is just about small enough to fit in a large jacket pocket. The 10-30mm kit lens is adequate but a little slow for poorly lit situations. Therefore, do upgrade to a fast prime if your finances allow.
