Reading in the dark just got easier...
For the last 5 or 6 years I've been using a 3rd generation kindle (the one with the keyboard) I loved it, easy to use and navigate. I always read at night and having the bedside lamp on until the early hours disturbed my husband. So I asked him to buy me a new kindle for my birthday, one with a backlight so I didn't need the lamp, and this is what he got me... It's taken me a few weeks to get used to it, loading my books into collections again, working out what downloaded, all, and the little ticks by the books all meant (helps if you read the built in manual I suppose) but I'm slowly getting to grips with it. The definite bonus is the back-lit screen. No more lamp needed, and I can read to my hearts content, in the light, in the dark, in bright sunlight... Its good. I'd prefer it if the books I've added to collections, didn't then still show up in my library as individual books as well as it confuses me and I have to then skip pages in the library to find another book I want to read where as with the 3g once in a collection, they didn't show up unless you opened that collection... Sometimes when I tap the screen to turn the page, if I haven't tapped further enough over to the right of the screen I end up turning the previous page rather than to the next page, which is a bit frustrating, but over all I'd give it a thumbs up 4 stars.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

Good value for the price. The case is a bit scruffy and there are a few 'pin holes' on the screen but frankly you don't notice them once you are reading. bought for holidays,but used all the time
as above i bought this because i was sick of taking my other kindles on holiday,but not being able to use them on the beach in sunlight,i asked a couple on the next beds to us what they were using and they told me to get a kindle paperwhite,i could see they used theirs every day so i bought 1,not had it on holiday yet but i read every day and it is lighter than my other kindles,and seems to have a great battery life.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

The reason I gave it 4 star is because there is a small crack (1cm length) to the screen. Only noticeable in certain lights and doesn’t affect the quality of the product, but it didn’t state there was a little crack in the screen on the product information. Re-furbished but looked like new.

with touchscreen and battery life nearly as good as the standard Kindle - ideal for a plane ride if you do not want to wake your neighbour up. (You can leave it on a low light setting without increasing the energy consumption much and if you find it in the dark, you will be able to find the menus.) The price/performance king of the bookreaders
It's still a very good value book reader for the price. It has been invaluable in the recent sunny weather - I can sit in the garden with sunglasses on and see the screen clearly. Cons: Compared to the current generation paperwhite the screen is slightly lower res and you don't get the ability to play audiobooks (but you play them on your phone anyway).
