I use this to join the optical output from my TV into the phono inputs on my stereo. I have had 2 of these gadgets before, (not FiiO). They both did not give much output so I had to turn the volume up a fair way on the amp. They also interfered with the sound adding a level of distortion. The FiiO has a good output and gives a very clean sound, wish I had bought it in the 1st place. You get a power adapter and a USB lead to connect it to the unit. If your telly has got a USB socket you can use this, as I do, to supply the power. You don't get an optical lead or phono connectors. It also has a coax (phono) input so you can use that as well. My only niggle is that the switch to go between coax and optical is fiddly to use. To sum up: I doubt you could do better for the money than this little DAC. It looks similar to the ones you can buy for 10 - 12 quid but it is much better quality in terms of its performance, which must be down to better quality components inside. What can I say? Its easy to use and comes with full instructions. The connectors are the type readily available everywhere. Its small and compact and cheap to buy. Highly recommended!

I got this to connect my Apple TV to an old analogue amplifier and speakers (Denon and Tannoy combination), as the HDMI switcher I have was giving me troubles with sound output. The Fiio seems to get good reviews wherever I looked, and having tried it myself, I can only say that it performs perfectly well here, and the sound from my streamed iTunes library is great. I simply plugged mine into a spare USB socket on a FreeView box, and haven't had any sound issues as yet. From the output I get from this, I would reckon it's worth paying a bit more than some of the other options available.

Sounds good but it just perform as PCM transmission. Nothing with dts. Or any multichannel digital cinema system. Just simple PCM stereo format.

I had previously bought a cheaper version. The sound through my hi-fi system is much better and stronger with the FiiO Taishan Coaxial/optical to analogue R/L Audio Converter
