I bought this camera as a Christmas present for my wife. She had hinted that she wanted a camera with a better zoom than the one she had so she could get more candid shots of our grandchildren and although I had a certain brand loyalty to Olympus, having dabbled as a part time professional photographer in my youth, (If Olympus is good enough for "David Bailey, Terence Donovan, Lord Snowdon et al)then..........etc but that isn't the reason I bought this camera. I'd read all the reviews of those who had purchased the SP-800UZ and although they were excellent and would sell this camera in a shot, I still wasn't happy. I couldn't get the idea out of my head that they had actually bought the camera and wouldn't want people thinking they had made the wrong choice. I therefore decided to purchase a subscription to "Which Consumer Magazine", with the sole purpose of reading the independant review of their testers. To my surprise and delight I found that the camera had made it into their "Best Buy" section. With particular emphasis on the picture quality, ease of use and the ultra-zoom. I was sold and bought the SP-800UZ the same day. A ccouple of dozen shots on Christmas day were fine but but then the real test came on Boxing day with our usual walk through the local forest a couple of miles from our home. I watched over her shoulder in horror as my wife held the camera in her finger tips, zoomed in and took the most perfect shot of our grandson we have ever seen. Shot after shot were absolutely perfect. .....thank you onca again Olympus.Read full review
This little Olympus camera was sent via Brighton, but I think (judging from the 6 second test video that came with it) it was reconditioned by Olympus USA. At about £180 delivered, and with all the cables plus a 8 GB card, I think it is great value for money. The most striking feature about this camera is the zoom - 30x optical, plus an extra 5x digital if needed! Because of it's in-built image stabalizers, I took two photographs of a rising moon in the street as a test - one at wide angle, and the other at maximum zoom, and the results were genuinely impressive. The wide-angle showed the moon as a dot, with the rest of the street below. The zoom actually showed mountains and craters on the moon's surface, and - for a hand-held shot - they were extremely well focussed. I wasn't even leaning against a lamp post. Not small enough to fit in your trouser pocket, but compact and pretty nevertheless, with a nice big screen. Most of the bulk is taken up by the lenses and housing for the zoom. Two disadvantages - it has no viewfinder, and the zoom does not operate in the video mode, but the quality of the footage (almost 3 hours with an 8 GB card) is pretty good. I would certainly recommend this camera. 30x zoom, for Pete's sake!!Read full review
We are not profescionals we wanted a good zoom camera and not having a fortune to spend, and after looking at various models, with the help of the Which magazine and finding a good deal on ebay, our choice was made the Olympus SP-800UZ 14 Megapixel Digital camera infact I bought it for my wife for Christmas, the camera is great but of course you can't put it in your pocket, the 30x ZOOM is fantastic, one of the dislikes is the instruction manual which is downloaded from the camera all 74 pages,(which covers every aspect, shooting movies and all) this caused a problem as it was a presant to my wife and I had not done this previous to her opening the box! we are still gaining confidence with the different menu settings etc: very happy with it so far.
Olympus SP-800UZ Digital Camera is easy to use, good picture and outstanding camera, you can use it any and all occasion, and gives fantastic result.
This is a great camera with a great zoom. Being a wildlife photographer it's perfect for me to carry about - instead of my Canon with the large zoom lens. It's taken lovely photographs. My only worry was learning how to use the camera as there is no manual - but that was soon rectified as I downloaded the manual off the website, so now busy reading and quite amazed what this little gem can do. I also thought it was going to be hard focusing through the back panel as I'm used to an eypeice - but I think it's a lot easier. It is certainly a great compact camera and it's a lot of fun as well.
