Excellent solution for adding Airplay 2 to any amplifier

I didn't need another router, but the Airport Express A1392 is a neat little router with a very unusual additional feature - it can add Airplay 2 connectivity to any amplifier. This lets me listen to an excellent classical music streaming service called Idagio on my main hi-fi system. It also enabled synchronised playback on an Airplay 2 wireless speaker in another room. This multiroom facility is controlled via an iPad or iPhone. Both analogue and optical digital audio outputs are provided by the Airport Express via a clever dual purpose mini-jack socket (I'm using the optical output). This audio signal is of high quality. Apple's installation instructions could be clearer, hence the deduction of one star, but I got there in the end. I'm still using my original wireless router and the Airport Express is simply being used for its Airplay 2 capabilities.

  • Most critical review

Not as reliable as I'd hoped.

Thisdoes a good job of repeating the wifi into another area but the airplay feature is very glitchy and the connection drops frequently.

  • Don't replace that stereo, don't bother with expensive bluetooth speakers - do this instead!

Brilliant bit of kit, easy to set up using Airport Express Utility v6 that was already on my Macbook in Utilities and with a good quality audio jack into the Tuner input on the amplifier gives great sound quality going from iTunes on my computer/iPhone via Airplay to the aged but excellent quality stereo that we still own. Freedom! and no need to buy new audio kit - reduce, re use, recycle. Airplay quality is far better than bluetooth options and this kit allows you to use it, and your existing kit.

  • A Rare Find!

My ancient Airport Express died after many years of use. No manufacturer makes an equivalent device . I was really pleased to find a recent version of the AE , brand new and still in original wrapping . It was sensibly priced, delivered rapidly and works brilliantly.

  • Great Device

I was disappointed that Apple stopped manufacturing this device, but I was pleased that I was able to get a brand new one sometime after the product was readily available from the high street. I already have two of these devices networked around the house as the main hub does not reach all rooms.

  • Works well, but needed a wired connection for initial setup / delivered very promptly

A great way of sending tunes wirelessly from my computer or iPhone to my hifi. The second one I've bought. A bit of a faff to set up initially (using a recent MacBook), due to the need for a wired connection to a computer, and the computer demanding dongles before it would even think about it. Anyway, after hooking it up to an old MacBook with an ethernet cable, it was very easy and intuitive to set up and connect to my existing WiFi network using Airport utility (tip: don't create a new network - the default option), and after the initial setup, Airport Utility (on computer and phone) seem able to manage things quite happily without further assistance from cables. Was a bit grubby when it arrived, but was fine after a quick wipe, and works fine.

  • Great product if you can snap a decent eBay bargain!

An improvement on the first-generation product with the Airplay 2 upgrade. The usual good quality build, design, and clean Apple aesthetic!

  • Great solution now Apple have stopped making new base stations.

I have half a dozen of these in my large house and one started to cause problems on the network, so when I went to buy a replacement I was surprised to find that Apple had moved out of this business. This replacement arrived from China on time and is identical to the rest of the base stations in the network and worked fine first time, after I set it up, which is straightforward. There were no instructions (not a problem, easily found online) or network cable with it, just the mains cable.

  • The perfect device

I was gutted when Apple stopped producing these. I've found them to be utterly reliable and a great way to extend your wifi range. I use them wired ( you can buy 70 meter lead for UKP 40 and then use it a a wifi source, rather than extending an existing signal You do need to have a mac/ iphone to use the airport utility which is really user friendly

  • Great Solution for wireless streaming

This product answered my search for an affordable solution to streaming my iTunes stored music to my HiFi downstairs. It’s a subtle package, easy to set up and can be controlled via the ‘remote’ app avails on the iPhone App Store. Recommended
