Panasonic 3MOS line of camcorders seems to rival professional HD cameras by design: 3MOS triple sensor system, advanced image stabilisation, wide angle quality Leica lens, 1080-50p recording. For my HD filming project I needed 3 good cameras so I bought used one SD800 and two SD600 camcorders. These models are practically the same in main functions and in the quality. All worked well and the project was a success. So, in general I am glad with these camcorders. Image stabilisation, zoon control, lens parameters – all was great. But I can share some observations. The image quality is pretty good, but even in good light conditions there is some noise – “crumbles” or “grains”, more obvious on plain surfaces. There is also sort of pixilation – one-colour squares larger than a single pixel. This is quite noticeable on a large HD screen, if you concentrate on this and watch from shorter distance. I noticed, that these are more prominent in the 1080p mode. In HA 1080-50i there is slightly less noise and also less “shadowing” of the moving objects (I now prefer this mode). I believe this might be down to overcompressing of digital video data. 1080-50p is compressed into 27Mbps data stream, whereas 1080-50i (half of raw data volume compare to 50p) is compressed into 24Mbps. As far as I know, 1080-50p BBC standard bitrate is 50Mbps, and some devices generate 87Mbps. As a result – the image quality is, of course HD, but not as smooth and detailed as on a good BlueRay disk. However, ALL consumer camcorders are streaming 1080-50p at 27Mbps. Does this mean the picture quality is somewhat compromised on all of them? The sound recording system is rather good: nice sound, effective auto-level, reasonable stereo, sensitive. But there is an issue: a small cooling fan is built into the body of the camcorder and it produces enough noise (or electrical interference?) to be heard in the footage when recording soft sounds and autolevel is amplifying everything. On the whole, I think these camcorders are quite good value for money and produce good footage in most cases. I would recommend them, but just bear in mind the limitations.Read full review
What a fantastic cancorder. The picture quality is amazing and it looks jawdropping on my 50inch Panasonic plasma. Very light and easy to use aswell. This cam replaced my Canon HF200 which i thought have amazing picture quality but the Panasonic is so much sharper especially in 50p. Low light is also very good and not at all grainy like my Canon. The current Panasonic 3mos cameras have to be the the best availble today for any consumer.

Hi. This is my first full HD camera. Bought a refurbished item with a one year warranty for £349. The playback from the camera onto my 46" TV is extremely good. Awesome detail and colour from corner to corner (the benefits of a large leica lens). Recorded sound is clear and natural. Indoors the camera copes well with low lux levels. I am not a techno but bought this camera after reading many reviews. Panasonic have achieved this high quality at this price by sacrificing a number of manual override options available on the much more expensive SD700. The internal workings are the same as the SD700. I have used this camera to record and play back on tv and store on my pc and haven't looked at a manual yet! Haven't had to charge battery yet either so that seems ok. Quality of play back on computer depends on the speed of the computer. The included software is user friendly and allows easy storage. I am using sandisk sdhc chips with 30 mb per second transfer speed. Expensive but excellent playback and security. I am very pleased with this camera.Read full review
