I bought this book because I have an interest in WW1, particularly literature written by the men who were in the thick of the fighting. I can do no better than reiterate the review by The Spectator - 'a delightful book'. Ivor Gurney has a captivating style of writing which is a joy to read. This book prompted me to go on and learn more about the man and to discover that his was a life of torment and tragedy. The title 'Stars In A Dark Night' is Gurney's description of the letters, sent to him whilst in the trenches, by the Chapman family; it could equally refer to the letters he sent to them.
