A great model for digitizing old PAL format DV tapes. Plays back all DV formats (Video8, Hi8, Digital8; LP and SP) recorded with Sony handycams and directly connects to a computer via IEEE 1394 cable (aka firewire, iLink). Digital video playback quality is 7/10 when compared with newer Sony handycam models. Does not play NTSC tapes.

Bought to transfer analogue Hi8 and 8 mm tapes to apple mac for editing and burning to DVD. Using the firewire for the transfer, which does the job, even though the original footage is entirely analogue. (am still investigating the best Apple route for the editing and burning process. Some films come out worse than a direct 'dub' on domestic dvd recorder.) But the camera is a lot better than the one on which the tapes were shot 20 or so years ago. (TR series, no digital, no screen.) Only done one actual recording which has met my expectations, considering this is all vintage kit now. I like the fact there are mic input and headphone output sockets, also the audio and picture options available. It has good low light capability, and I'm planning to use it at some 'rock' gigs. Of course it is bulky and heavy compared to todays tapeless cameras, but I expected that. I also prefer switches and buttons to touch screen controls, so it suits me fine.Read full review
