Before I purchased this camera I was using a mid-range Canon DSLR with some very good L-series lenses. So why buy the Sony? A major factor in my decision was the size. While the Canon gear was/is hugely capable, it was also bulky and heavy, not good for holidays etc. The Sony by comparison is very compact and very lightweight and, because of this, is more likely to be taken with me. The camera itself is fairly easy to use, although I have to say that the menu system is not very well implemented. Setting the camera up to work the way you like it is, at best, awkward and at worst, totally frustrating. That said, once you have worked out the menus, you can tailor the camera pretty well to suit your own style of shooting and I am sure that future firmware upgrades will address the awful menu structure. A major selling point of the NEX7 has to be the 24.3 Megapixel sensor. It's getting close to medium-format levels of resolution, however...! The sensor itself is only APS-C sized and by squeezing that many pixels onto it Sony have risked creating a lot of sensor noise. They have done a very good job of keeping the noise at bay though, and the camera is capable of capturing beautifully detailed images (just keep the ISO settings as low as you can). The other problem with a sensor of this size/resolution is that you need a very good lens to do it justice. The current e-mount range from Sony is quite limited and although the kit 18-55mm lens is quite acceptable, it is nowhere near good enough to do the sensor justice. Apart from the Carl Zeiss 24mm, I dont think that there are any lenses in the current range that I would currently consider buying. An option that I am finding very tempting is using adapters and some older lenses. There are some good pieces of old glass out on e-bay and, even though they can only be used manually, I am sure that they can outperform the current Sony offerings. Using the NEX7 is a very satisfying experience, once set up the controls work really well and it is very intuitive, the only bugbear being the video record button which is too easy to press by accident (I've done this dozens of times). The built in viewfinder is really clear and is a real boon when the sun's out, the screen is also very clear, the built in flash is OK for indoor shots (theres a proper hotshoe if you need a decent flash) and overall I have to say I am quite impressed. Compared to a good DSLR the Sony has it's limitations (slowish autofocus, no optical viewfinder etc.) but I do think the differences are slight and, for me anyway, not big enough to stop me from buying one. Yes I do think it is a bit too expensive but the fact that I am now using my NEX7 a lot more than I used the Canon DSLR has more than justified the price. It's horses for courses I guess but it is a very well built camera and I would recommend it to anyone.Read full review
It's a great camera with really good image quality, the two lenses have great stabilisation which is very useful for taking pictures without a tripod.
