Antique victorian/edwardian purdonium (coal box), mahogany, approxi’m pretty certain it’s mahogany, but i’m not knowledgeable about woodsthe ‘floor’ has reinforcing blocks underneath, for extra strength (see last photo)just about square, with a tilting-out front door, and a metal liner inside – the metal liner has handles to lift it out for cleaning / re-loadingit is quite heavy – kgapart from that, it appears to be in good, original conditionthis is why i have put “(a/f)” (or as found) in the titleoriginal ornate brass handles and plates, one each side, one on the front(if these cannot be properly restored, one option would be to remove the gallery completely, and maybe put a glass top on the boxcondition it has (or had) a pillared gallery around 3 sides of the top – unfortunately, 1 side and the back (still joined) have come off, and several of the baluster-shaped pillars are missing (see 2nd photo)51x35x34 cm (a/f) here is a general description, but please refer to the photographs

Lovely antique mahogany edwardian or victorian fireside coal box, scuttle / purdonium / log binbeautifully carved front with ornate brass and wood carry handle on the top and a brass handle on the frontwould look lovely at the side of any multi fuel stove, original, or modernwe’ve had it since the ’s but never used it - we didn’t have a coal fire ! even though coal fires are being phased out now it’s ideal for newspapers and magazines or even a shoe box ! no tin liner as these were prone to corrosion due to the sulphur in the coal
