Sold to me as a cuckoo marans but is definitely a crosshe looks similar to my cream legbar cockerel, so my guess is that he is a cuckoo marans x cream legbar which means he will have the olive egg geneso if he were to be bred with a cream legbar hen, the offspring would lay blue or olive eggs and if he were bred with a marans hen, the offspring would lay a dark brown or dark olive eggthe perfect addition to a rainbow egg flock! near belper, derbyshire instagram: lawnlayers read more

Cuckoo marans lay a dark brown egg, often shiny, and often the pigment takes about a month to come in fully to their eggshellsthey are pure bred cuckoo marans from my own breeding flock and despite the lockdown have been kept outside since 5 weeks but protected by netting overhead and down the sides of their peni also have eggs for sale, believed fertile, from the parent groupi hatched a small number of chicks last autumn and raised them through the wintertheir sisters' eggs can be seen to give you an idea of what they are likely to lay in the futurethey are now about 22 weeks old and have already laid a few small eggs as i have kept them longer than usualthe hatching eggs are £1truth to tell i've been reluctant to sell these three hens too soon, partly because of the ai lockdown and partly because they stand out from my mixed hatch as really cheeky and proper characters) i prefer my pol hens to go to a home which is as free range as possible as this breed can easily run to fat if they don't get sufficient exercise and, of course, like all chickens, they like to forage and to eat grass each daytheir mothers are quite good layers, despite the breed having a reputation for a short laying season and their slightly older sisters have laid almost all the way through the winternormally i sell them at 18 weeks75 each and the cockerel in the group is from a breeder in nottingham who shows his eggs, although not his birds(i do not inbreed my pure breed chickens because i don't think it's healthy for themthey are £28 each again this year but i'm happy to sell the trio for £75
