East sussex smallholders are back for the summer season with the new point of lay garden chickenswe are open every day for chicken collection, including this mothers day - we always have a good selection of: light sussex rhode rock / miss pepperpot blue haze / bluebelle gold speckedly skyline (blue / green egg layers) brown farm rangers calder red / french red our hens are lovingly cared for by us at our 5 acre smallholding, where we try to live as self sufficiently as possible, rearing our own food and vegetable gardenif you have any spares, we will gladly take them:¬) we were delighted to be selected as the consultants by the production crew, and we recently featured as the chicken supplier to marcus wareings "tales from a kitchen garden" - where we taught smallholding skills and chicken keeping to celebrity chef and tv star marcus, on his journey to run his own smallholding up the road from us - so you can be sure that you are buying chickens from a very reputable sourceplease bear in mind before making a journey to see us - this isn't a corporate business with lots of staff, but a family home and garden, so definitely call or text to check we are available for visitors before comingour ladies are all vaccinated, and at 18 weeks old, they have just started laying their first small eggsyou will also need to bring a cardboard box, dog crate, cat carrier, as we don't tend to have spare boxes here

The are crossed from a light sussex hen to a buff orpington cockerellight sussex are excellent egg layers with mine not missing a day since she started laying at 19 weeksthey were hatched on the 11th july so are 14 weeks oldorpington are also good layers and will produce between 5-7 eggs per week, they are also more hardy so will often lay through winter when others have stoppedthis is a great combination of birds, combining brilliant qualities from eachwill be easily tamed by feeding by hand which i already do and so will make lovely pets and egg layers

Last year i crossed my lovely rhode island red cockerel with my light sussex hensthe photo's were taken julythey will look after your hens if you are in need of a cockerel & give good warning of any predatorssocial distancing will be in effect with all callers - in the current climatethe female hens went on to become good layers & the cockerels were 'fatteners'this is a standard cross used many years agoa good cockerel will also assist in eliminating any bullying in the female hensboth cockerels are now just over a year oldthese two male hatching's are now looking for a homethey would have been my mum & dad's chicken dinner many years ago - before the introduction of the current ross & cobb birds etci have two for sale - £5they were hatched july
