Also referred to as a philosopher's lampthe antique figure is from the top of a rare döbereiner's lamp of the 19th century, "a döbereiner's lamp is a lighter invented by the german chemist johann döbereiner in & based on the fürstenberger lighter" this charming & tactile lighter is made of solid brass with a nice patinait was in production until aboutapprox 2 1/2" tall from the bottom of the screw thread to the top of his hatthe item is in its expected condition for its agethis was one of the first methods of producing an instant flame & one of the earliest gas lights ever inventedthe casting looks goodhe is kneeling down with his legs crossedhe has a long moustache & pointed hatthe gas jet in his mouth freely unscrewsa very charming, rare & tactile itemthe ignition would have been catalysed by platinum metalboth his arms liftthe hole under the screw would allow the hydrogen gas to flow once the valve is openedit would make a great addition to any collectionplease study the images, as they also form part of the description & please also do your own research can post at extra costit would have been originally owned by someone extremely wealthyit works by the action of sulphuric acid on zinc producing hydrogen, which ignites when the gas jet passes over finely divided platinumpostage includes being signed for**postage within the ui believe moving his arms would release the value & produce a self igniting flameonly** read moreone of his arms is not connected to the object he is holdinga jet of hydrogen would then be released from his mouth & burst into a flame
