My Virgin Media SuperHub 2 modem/wireless router was causing problems with dropped connection, particularly as I added more and more devices to the network. Online advice suggested using the SuperHub in modem mode and adding an external wifi router. the D-Link DIR842/AC1200 is inexpensive and consistently well reviewed. It was a doddle to set up, taking less than 10 minutes from plugging in to customising the 5Ghz, 2.4Ghz and Guest 2.4Ghz wireless networks. I plugged my MacBook into the router for easiest setup up, but this can also be done wirelessly. I choose the existing network SSID and passwords from my old setup and all devices then automatically connect to the new wireless setup, without needing to do anything to any of the devices. The problem of dropped connections has been solved, the speed and stability is excellent, and I would not hesitate to recommend this budget choice.Read full review

Huge improvement. I had been using the router supplied by my provider, and it was nowhere up to the job. I had endless problems, especially when streaming movies or when more than one device was on line. In the course of many conversations, my provider as good as told me their router can only cope with one device at a time. Now two of can stream at the same time while pc's, phones, etc., are connected at the same time. Great router, I happily recommend it.
