His debut solo album Jesus of Cool was new wave pop rock a little similar to that of label mate Elvis Costello. This his second album saw him move to a more country ish hard rock sound with more of a 60s influence this time. A great album which sounds fresh even today. Cruel to be Kind sounds rather bland but the rest that follows is way better - Cracking Up, Born Fighter, Skin Deep Love so Fine and especially Switchboard Susan (a beefed up Stones tune) would sound relevant in any decade. Nick lowe was always better known for his production work for many other acts, this album was only a minor hit when it first came out and remains something of a lost classic worth reassessing.
