I Purchased this to replace my old Netgear that was having connection problems, The Linksys's WAG320N is the fast with fantastic wifi range, much better than the old netgear. It's not short of other features, either; it has a USB port that lets you share an external hard disk over the Lan, and across the internet via FTP. It can also act as a UPnP media server. Another added benefit is the Gigabit Ethernet, which is great if you need a fast connection to move large files across your local network. Setup is easy and secure, thanks to the simple installer that provides pre-configured settings for most of the UK's ADSL providers. The web interface is also easy to use, despite the huge number of settings. Wifi defaults to 802.11n wireless at 2.4GHz but can also be used at 5GHz. More than happy with my purchaseRead full review
As background, I am an admistrator for a corporate network, so I know quite a bit about netwrok management. I bought this as we use Cisco routers/switches as part of our corporate network, and they perform well. I wanted the network storage, which in all fairness works well and is very easy to setup. The problems I see with this revolves around security and performance. Security is basic. You get a simple firewall that blocks all incoming, and allows all outgoing communication. For someone who does not know about networks, and wants simple setup this is fine. You do get a few simple rules you can add to restrict outgoing traffic, but in my view this is not enough. If you get something nasty on your computer and don't know about it, it will have unlimited access to do what it wants, and that is not good. Why can't all manufacturers give you a basic quick setup like this, but have an advanced tab for people who know what they are doing? For speed, this is the biggest disappointment. Internally, I have a new laptop with wireless 'n' which claims to connect to this router at 150MB/s. When transferring files to the routers hard drive, connected to the router by usb, I was getting 1.5 MB/s, way below what this setup should support. Trying to copy to a NAS connected to the router by 100MB/s LAN, connected to the 1GB LAN port on the router, I was getting 180KB/s. Terrible performance. Connecting via some 200MB/s powerline adapters I have was much faster. Really this kind of network performance is not good enough. My ADSL connection reports 11MB/s, so it indicates that my connection to the outside world is faster than internally. I know what you are thinking, he does not have his network setup right, but believe me, I know how to configure a network. I have two playstations which my son and I use to play online games, and we could both see they ran worse than my previous router. I have stopped using this router and gone back to an old Draytek router, with a wireless 'n' access point connected. I now have full firewall control, and quicker networking speeds with playstations that play much better. Come on Cisco (or Lynksys by Cisco if you prefer), pick your game up. Just because we are home users, does not mean we have to put up with inferior devices. One good point was it never seemed to drop my wireless or ADSL connection which was reported in other reviews I have read.Read full review
I live in a very old house with very thick walls and this baby managed to go through 3 floors! the speed and signal did decline once i went underground to my bedroom (hence 4/5) however this is an astonishing piece of kit. I am not very tech savvy but this router is very easy to set up and the call centre people are very friendly; I also didn't have to spend 3 hours queueing to be answered. I would thoroughly recommend this item.
