The camcorder is light and compact making it easy to hold. All the buttons fall easy to hand and most functions are easy to access. The 8GB memory is good for most situations with memory cards icreasing recording time. Battery life is good,but recharge time a little long. A second battery is a good addition for those wanting to record for a long time. Image quality is very good in HD and lower settings are ideal for upload to the web. Overall a very good camcorder for the price.
I find that the controls on this video camera are dreadful to use. They are too small. I do not have large fingers but time and again I end up in the wrong menu. The quality of the pictures is very good. I also would stress to any buyer to download the full guide to use. Well over a hundred pages but vital if you are to keep a check on what to do when out in the field filming. I plan to take this Camera to China and have bought it because it is small, but I am now wondering if I should forfeit some luggage space by taking my Canon XM 2. A vastly superior Camera to use. I also find little if any differance in the quality of the pictures between this camera and the XM2. High definition looks to me like a sales gimmick.
I am absolutely delighted with my purchase of the Legria HR 17. The picture quality is outstanding compared to my previous camcorder ( Somy mini dv tape). The only downside of HD recorders is how you play back the edited movie. It can be saved on an SD card and played back on the camera via the HD output or you can buy a HD media player ( Cyclone micro 2+). However in order to play it back on the above media player you must record your video at the highest( FXP), so I found out. Alternatively if you have a DVD burner that can burn HD movies and a Blu-ray player then you can play it back this way. But be warned that you will need additional hardware if you wish the play back the edited movie on anything else apart from the camera's HD output. I think this is the case for all HD camcorders, not just this one. But the effort is worth it, because the picture quality is truely outstanding. Not quite broadcast quality, but mind-blowingly good when compared to non HD devices. I managed to get this cancorder for £150 from ebay as a used item from adams electronics. When I received the goods, the camcorder seemed brand new, only the box it came in looked a bit battered. So it you can get this product, at the price I payed for it, it is a steal.Read full review
