The sets were very period style with heavy oak doors and pannelling and a swinging chandelior that starts to smoke in the last Act.
In addition, as with Alfred Hitchock, in this Stefan Herheim co-production with Dutch National Opera, Tchaikovsky makes an appearance as Prince Yeletsky.
The orchestral playing by the Royal Opera House orchestra, conducted by Antonio Pappano, was excellent, along with the singing with Aleksandrs Antonenko as Gherman, Alexander Kravets as Chekalinsky, Vladimir Stoyanov as Tchaikovsky/Prince Yeletsky.
