The photos above are from the original programme, which has been sold, although the scans are scanned from the programme in colour.
The set itself was minimalistic and mostly dark, with a rear CinamaScope style screen, but there were fabulous colours throughout the performance, and the scene turned from carmen red to pink, yellow and light blue, amongst others at various parts of the performance.
The lighting was also dramatic with a variety of colours.
The stage floor was also a shiny reflective paved surface, and this also reflected the various colours throughout the performance.
The various rooms were created by panels, again different from the Ellen Kent production water garden.
The Japanese traditional costumes were extremely colourful throughout with extremely rich fabrics being used, including the formal Sokutai robes and Kanmuri headgear was particularly effective, particularly the curls on the top, especially for Prince Yamadori, the Bonze, and the Imperial Commissioner.
The orchestral playing by the English National Opera orchestra was excellent, conducted by Martyb Brabbins, along with the singing with Natalya Romaniw as Cio-Cio.San (Madam Butterfly), Stepanie Windsor-Lloyd as Suzuki, Dimitri Pittas as Lt. F. B. Pinkerton, Katie Stevens as Kate Pinkerton, Roderick Williams as US Consol, Njabula Madiala as Prince Yamadori, Keel Watson as The Bronze, Paul Napier-Burrows as the Imperial Commissioner and others, including the Blind Puppet Theatre and the boy, Madam Butterly's son with puppeteers Mark Downs and Nick Barnes.
