I picked up The Long Way Down while staying in a room at a pub in North Yorkshire. I had heard of Ewan Mcgregor but didn't really know who he was. Never heard of Charlie Boorman, no interest in bikes and don't normally read travel books. I would never have bought it but found myself irritated that I was only there for one night and therefore unable to finish it. I came straight home and sent for both Long Way Round and Long Way Down and I have thoroughly enjoyed both. I think the narrative style of both Authors works really well and although they are obviously very close friends, they have included the odd spat between them and their support team which somehow makes it all the more believable. All the love and camaraderie might have seemed a bit sickly without that. The descriptive passages make it easy to visualise the places and the hardship of the journey and reading these two books has made me want to read more like this, and to watch similar programs on TV such as The Cold Chain. The only problem is that I usually pass books on to my mum but I'm afraid she is not a fan of the "F" word and it features fairly regularly.Read full review
